They're not closing their code because they want also let others improve it when they have the capability to do it. Linux which is a system kernel is among them. The core of that system is without bugs. Some servers have been running during 5 years at never restarting. You need a firewall or a mail server ? You have an old 486 somewhere ? No need to buy a new computer, your old computer will do the job in a corner of your office.
